Book Review: Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor

Akata Witch Book 1

A 12-year-old albino girl raised in the United States and Nigeria feels like an outcast until new friends introduce her to a mysterious magical world.

  • The magic system in this book is incredible. I love the magic education and mentorship structure and the levels of magic users. Also, the natural and learned abilities described are really interesting!
  • The characters are well-developed with clear purpose.
  • This book is great for a large audience. As a 30-something, I enjoy how well-written it is, and I know that many of my 6th grade students would find the characters relatable and the story interesting.

  • There isn’t anything I’d change about this book!
